Victory & Prosperity Through God’s Word – Joshua 1:8
What better verse to memorize, than a verse that instructs us to, you got it, memorize God’s word! Let’s take a look at Joshua 1:8.
Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.
– Joshua 1:8
The book of Joshua starts out with the Lord speaking to Joshua, after Moses’ death. Joshua has just been given the heavy duty of leading the Jews for the next 28 years. He is commanded here by the Lord to keep His commandments and do everything according to the “book of the law” which was given to Moses, (the Torah). He was to make all his judgements, decisions, and rulings based on God’s rules. Don’t you wish all our world leaders did this!?
Memorize and Meditate
In the first part of this verse, “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night”, Joshua is commanded to repetitively read and stay focused on God’s word, so much so that He is capable of keeping it on his lips, or mouth, which is memorization.
Results and Rewards
In the second half of this verse, “so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” God promises Joshua (and us) that if we stay in His Word, and apply it, He promises us prosperity and victory. For Joshua this was prosperity for the Jewish nation and victory in battles over the Canaanites.
What are the battles you are facing? Maybe there are no battles right now, maybe it’s just decisions or even daily living. No matter our place in life, we are promised that when we apply God’s rules and consult with Him, staying in His scripture, we will be guaranteed prosperity and success in the battles of our lives.
Please don’t let the words prosperity and success lead you to believe that you will be rich and live in a mansion and all these other earthly “prosperity” terms. However, I believe that even earthly definitions of prosperity are more likely when you obey and keep His Word and commands in your life. Remember, God is in control and knows best.
Jesus has already won the battle (successful), and offers us a more prosperous life through His victory! Stay encouraged to stay in His Word, there is incredible power in being able to cite scripture from memory. God’s Word crushes the enemy and gives us victory!

Thanks for this reminder! Of all the things in the world we could know for memory… What could there be better than God’s word?
Thanks for the challenge. I will fight my battles by trusting in the Lord and being anchored by His Word.
